Rani: It's lovely playing a Bengali
'Saif brings out the best in me'
Her performance in Black impressed everyone. And now this husky-throated actress gets ready to show off her 'motherly' side.
Siddharth Anand's Ta Ra Rum Pum sees Rani Mukerji opposite Saif Ali Khan, who plays a racing car driver.
Rani talks about the experience of working with children, and how she can see herself as a mother seven years from now.
Ta Ra Rum Pum talks about the positive spirit in the face of adversity. Have you gone through such a situation in your life?
Life is all about coping and bouncing back from such situations. If something goes wrong, be patient and take the love and support of your family and you will get through it.
What do you think of the film's music?
The music of Ta Ra Rum Pum is phenomenal and I really love it. Vishal and Shekar have done complete justice to it. Every song in the movie is melodious and very sweet, which blends with the entire film.
Javed Akhtar has written fantastic lyrics which really tells you about the character and the situation.
If you were to dedicate a song from the film, which one would you choose and for whom?
I would like to dedicate the title track Ta Ra Rum Pum to my parents because of the way they have brought me up. My parents have gone through problems in their lives with great courage and love. They commitment has bound us together and helped overcome all the obstacles that ever came our way.
What was it like working with Siddharth Anand?
It's lovely working with Siddharth. I fondly call him Sid. I know him from school so it's very difficult for me to accept that he is my director. But now that I have done a film with him, I can say yes, he's my director. A really cool and young one at that.
I had a lot of fun working with him. He absolutely knows what he wants.
What's really nice and common thing about him and me is that both of us are commercial and 'massy'. We are die hard fans of Hindi films.
Tell us about your role in the film.
My role is about a girl who is the strength of the family. She is the wife and mother who holds the entire family together with strength, courage and love.
Five things you would do on a happy Ta Ra Rum Pum day?
Spend time with my family, play with my niece, eat fantastic Bengali food, watch a great Hindi film and sleep for 24 hours!
What was it like playing a Bengali on screen?
It's always lovely to play a Bengali because you get to say one or two words in your mother tongue, though it's a real tongue twister for someone born and brought up in New York as my character in the film is. Her name is a tongue twister too -- Radhika Shekar Rai Banerjee!
How was playing a mother of two kids like?
It's been a wonderful experience. It just made me feel that seven years down the line, I would be like that. If I had married early, I would probably have had two kids by now.
The most interesting part of the film was working with children. They were exceptional and talented. They were also very professional and very, very hard working. They memorised their lines well and were in tune with the film. Sometimes, they had to stay up till 3 am!
Do you relate to the inherent positive spirit in Ta Ra Rum Pum?
Yes. The entire approach of Ta Ra Rum Pum is that when you are in a crisis, you can overcome it with love, hope and strength.
What was it like working with Saif again?
It was wonderful. Saif has come really a long way since Hum Tum and it is always nice to work with him. He is one of my co-stars who I get along with very well.
Acting is all about reacting and when you have such a fantastic actor in front of you, you tend to give your best.
After playing serious roles, would you classify this as a light-hearted one?
I would not call it a light-hearted role. It is a very strong role, character wise. I portray a woman of strength and courage.
Having worked with fashion designers Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra in the past, how was it working with Surily Goel?
It's wonderful working with Surily because she's very hard working and always give her best. Hopefully, the audience will like my look.
What is it like working with Yash Raj Films?
Yash Raj films is not merely a production house for me. I feel at home here because of the faith and trust they have in me. I cannot thank them enough for that.
Yash uncle has made his banner with a lot of love and care towards the people who work for him. The entire unit and production team is like a family and they treat you like one.
The kind of roles they offer me are also good. At the time when I did Saathiya, Yash uncle and Adi (Aditya Chopra) were very convinced that I do the role whereas I was not. They were right and Saathiya became a turning point in my career.
Do you enjoy watching car racing?
I would not say that I love watching car racing because that's more of a guy's thing. But yes, when I went for the shooting of Ta Ra Rum Pum, I was really excited being at the race track. The sound of cars is exciting.
