Directors Talk About Rani
Meghna Gulzar : “It would be a great pleasure to work with Kajol and Rani. They are fabulous actresses. They experiment with their roles.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali : "Rani's is the best performance by a female actor since Seema Biswas in Bandit Queen"
Sanjay Leela Bhansali : "Look at her track record. In two years she has gone way beyond all competition... Hum Tum , Veer-Zaara and now Black , three hits in a row! Which of her colleagues has that advantage? Rani has gone way beyond the competition."
Sanjay Leela Bhansali : "Rani was almost drifting on the sets of Black. The role did that to her. I think she has given an unbelievable performance! With her, I have altered the definition of an Indian protagonist. Here is a hero who might not be your glam gal but is fighting odds. And is heroic in the truest sense! What Rani gives me is spontaneity. Research is great; homework is fine too. But if you begin to meditate on the role, it loses its edge somewhere. The moment is here and you need to deliver right then. Life can't be rehearsed and the moments shouldn't be either."
Sanjay Leela Bhansali : "Rani's rawness is irreplacable, her unpolished touch. She will give you a world-class shot and not realize that she has done so. And therein lies the magic. She can be completely 'bindaas' and before you bat an eyelid, can bring a Madhuri-like 'nazakat' in her. The lady is versatile in the most wonderful manner. Rani is the biggest star today!"
Karan Johar : "She is an amazing talent who has become one of our finest actresses. I feel proud to have been part of the process.”
Karan Johar returns with Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna. He talks exclusively to Subhash K Jha about its making And Rani Mukherji?
I love Rani as a person and a performer. She stood by me when I was just starting out. She has been in touch with me nearly every day, throughout the years, without expecting anything in return. She's like my kid sister. That eclipses her other equally important ability as an actor. Today she's a rock-solid professional. She did everything to get her character in Alvidaa right.
Karan Johar : "In the world after Black, Rani euphoria reigns supreme. I feel like a proud parent who has seen Rani grow and mature as an actor. Rani has starred in the biggest hits in the last two years. And for a star like her, recognition and critical acclaim will only increase."
Karan Johar : "Rani is a extremely warm and giving person. She's incapable of negative behavior. And the postivitey shows in her performances."
Karan Johar : “I’ve just gone through a life-changing experience. It’s called Black… Mr Bachchan’s is the best performance I’ve seen by a male actor. And Rani? My God! When I remember how I’d scream instructions at her during Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I wonder what I was doing! Rani has surpassed not just her contemporaries but almost everything done by actresses in our cinema in the last 50 years.”
Yash Chopra : "The ease with which she emotes is amazing. Her understanding of the character and its execution is the key"
Kunal Kohli : "You wouldn't even realise the power in the scene you have written till you see her perform it on the screen"
Kunal Kohli : "Rani is definitely the number one heroine today. Her body language and histrionics were perfect, even in a film like Bichhoo. She’s probably the only heroine to have played a sexy widow with elan in Hum Tum. She’s also one of the few heroines to have bagged, both the best actress and supporting actress award in the same year."

Journalist: Shah Rukh how is your back problem these days? And Rani, what about the rumours of your affair with Abhishek Bachchan?
Shah Rukh: My back is behaving well. So is Rani!
Shah Rukh Khan talks about Rani Mukerji
At the press conference of Chalte Chalte: ‘I treat her like a kid, when I feel she's not putting all her effort in a shot I give her a light slap, we have that kind of a relationship. We just took off from where we left in KKHH, this is my first full feature film with her and it’s been yet another wonderful experience, she hasn’t even taken any money for the film yet!’ and when they asked him about Rani acting as a wife in the movie, he said 'It's a great performance, a different role to that of hers in Saathiya contrary to what people say. She's superb in Chalte Chalte and I can say now that whichever guy steals Rani's heart, is going to be very lucky.'
In the making of KKHH: ‘I’ve worked with a few newcomers recently (Mahima, Preity and Rani) and Rani is the best of the lot. She lights up the screen with her appearance, she’s very very beautiful and extremely talented, it was a pleasure working with her.’

Aamir Khan : "She has very expressive eyes through which she conveys a lot. She has a great understanding of the scene, is able to catch the right key."
Aamir Khan : "Rani is one of my closest friends, we can talk about anything."
Anil Kapoor: "Though I don't feel any actress can live upto the mark Madhuri has left, Rani is definitely the top contendor for the slot."
Abhishek Bachchan: “Rani is a very, very good friend, and by far one of the best actors we have today. She doesn’t need any help. She makes anybody she works with look good. And that’s exactly what happened in ‘Yuva’. I worked with her first in a movie called ‘Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai’. I had a lot of trouble with her then, and I have the same trouble now. Evidently she hasn’t grown in years!”
Hrithik Roshan : "It was a pleasure working with Rani. She is very professional, very friendly and easygoing. She leaves all negativity behind when she comes on the sets. And she's a great friend. Rani and I make a very earthy pair. We don't look unbelievably glamorous on screen. We look like a real couple."
Sanjay Maroo : "I do like Rani Mukherjee, cause she can emote really well."
Upen Patel : "My favourite actresses are Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta, I'd love to work with them."
Anupam Kher: "First of all, she is an extremely talented actress. Rani has proved herself with Black. Without a doubt, she is a major pull at the box office. Also, she is a warm and straight forward individual. She would never indulge in petty politics. The best part about her is that she keeps everyone smiling and wants the world to be happy."
Salman Khan : "I have worked with Rani in a few films. She wasn’t taken seriously, initially. But now her talent is there for all to see. She is the only actress who has incredible comic timing. Even though she sported ugly glasses and had an awkward gait in Black, her performance was simply amazing. She doesn’t stoop to manipulation or backbiting. Now I can confidently say, she is here to stay."
Saif Ali Khan : "My favourite actresses of all time are (named 2 Hollywood actresses) and Rani Mukerji."
Saif Ali Khan : "My favourite costars are Kajol and now Rani Mukerji. They're very natural actresses and act spontaneously."
Akshay Kumar : "Today I am hungry for good roles, the only other performer I see that hunger in is Rani Mukerji. She's trying all sorts of great roles

“With Rani around, you can never realise how big a star she is,” concurs Jaideep Sahni, who scripted her most recent hit, Bunty Aur Babli. How big? She has been part of some of the blockbusters of the last two years which have raked in about Rs 160 crore for the industry. At number 10, she is the only woman to figure in Filmfare's Bollywood power list. At a rumoured Rs 2-2.5 crore, she's among the highest-paid actresses. “Our industry might still be hero-dominated but she has the best track record among heroines,” says distributor Sanjay Mehta. “She is a great performer, has bagged the most sought after productions and has all the big banners and heroes in her kitty,” says Komal Nahata, editor, Film Information.
Priyanka Gandhi is a fan, so seems Manmohan Singh. She is a star presence at all the state dinners, be it in honour of General Pervez Musharraf or the Singapore PM. For an industry that has been desperately searching for Heroine No. 1 ever since Madhuri Dixit and Kajol quit, Rani is Queen of Hearts, finally. “The media has always been asking me, why not you (as No. 1). Now they are telling me, yes it's you. I feel happy to make my family, my parents feel proud,” she says.
Everyone is talking about her. Like Aamir Khan, with whom she started on her road to success with Aati Kya Khandala in Ghulam and with whom she appears again in the forthcoming historical Mangal Pandey. He can't get over how the jawans in Kargil kept asking him about her when he went there for a TV shoot. “If a star comes closest to holding the kind of sway that Madhuri or Kajol did, it's Rani,” he says. So, even though Mangal Pandey might be his show, the whispers are as strong about Rani who plays Heera, a courtesan in a brothel frequented by the soldiers of the East India Company. “She has the ability to stand out even in the biggest of star casts,” says Vinod Mirani, editor, Box Office.

Which actors would you like to work with?“I like the dedication and motivation the younger actors have. I’d like to work with them all - Priyanka Chopra, Gul Panag (I liked her in Dor and Dhoop), Rani Mukherjee… Among the actors, I’d like to work with Sanjay Dutt. He’s becoming more and more interesting as he matures.” movies.indiatimes.com/quickies/msid-1875345.cms

"I think chemistry has got nothing to do with either your intentions or how you feel. Like there are many real life lovers who don’t have chemistry on screen, then there are people who don’t even know each other that set the screen on fire. I agree I have great screen chemistry with Rani. I was watching ‘Hum Tum’ the other day and I just think it’s a magical movie in parts. I think she’s a phenomenal actor and she brings something really special to the screen, for which I respect her a lot. It is competitive for me to be working with her because I actually want to be better than her because she is so very good." Saif Ali Khan

"It's always great fun shooting with Rani. She is a very good friend and a wonderful co-star. A lot of the plot in 'Bunty Aur Babli' depends on the chemistry between our characters. During the narration Shaad had stressed the compatibility factor between the actors. Having Rani on the other side made it easy for me." Abhishek Bachchan

"I've worked with her before in "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham". And now I'm doing Shaad Ali's "Bunty Aur Babli" with her. Rani is a natural. I've always admired her acting. Very spontaneous and instinctive. No director needs to explain excessively to her. "Black" is Rani's best.
To have a co-star like her who gives the right cues and responses certainly enhances my performing ability. Most of my scenes in "Black" are with Rani. That gave us time to build up the moments. It all helped to give "Black" that cutting edge, which you've noticed. " Amitabh Bachchan

"I don’t want to say Rani is my friend, because it's such a misused term. So I’ll call her my student. Because she did her first big film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, with me. And nobody knows this but I chose her for that film. She had just been launched and Karan was looking for a girl. I had seen just one shot of Rani but I told Karan, `Take that girl, she’s got a very interesting face; she’s got something as an actor.’ Otherwise, I never suggest heroines. I think Rani’s never really been given her due. She can be a little scatterbrained but if she puts her mind to it, she can come up with great stuff. This movie was made in four months, she wasn’t doing anything else, so she’s been focused on it and she’s outstanding. She’s the reason to watch this film. By the way, she’s Gauri’s favorite actress." SRK
